Who Do Non Kilkenny People Want To Win?

Postby Captain Scarlet » Wed Aug 27, 2008 11:35 am

Over the next week or so, the national media will have you believe that 31 counties will be shouting for Waterford. But I don’t believe this is true. More people want us to win that we will be led to believe.

I’ve spoken to a lot of Kerry people lately and they all want Kilkenny to win. Probably as a result of mutual admiration in chosen sports. The same is true of Tipperary supporters who’s dislike of the Waterford supporter, particularly in the South has grown hand in hand with the same dislike in by people in South Kilkenny. However, in Tipp it is being quietly mentioned, as they don’t really want to be seen vocally supporting us. I am also led to believe that we have strong support in the North, especially in Antrim. Cork would obviously prefer us not to win, again for obvious reasons, which is completely understandable and you could certainly not bear them any animosity for that.

So who do the non Kilkenny contributors to the site want to see win as distinct to who they believe will win. Tell us your county, your preference and if you like why. Will it really be 31 v 1?

Obviously, Waterford people will want Waterford and that’s understandable too, so there is really no need for the Waterford and Kilkenny posters to tell us their preference.

I want Waterford to win but you are surprisingly correct to state that the rest of Tipperary doesn’t feel the same way. I just think it would be better to let them have their All-Ireland so they can quietly go away.

Ken McGrath, Tony Browne and a few others deserve at least 1 All-Ireland, they’ll have to earn it mind because top level Sport isn’t sentimental.

I'm from Dublin and actually want Waterford to win. No offence to KK as I respect them in their domination of the Hurley Championship over the last few years, but for me it comes down to who I'd prefer watch and Kilkenny's tactics, for me, are underhand. Waterford play the glamour ball. Give me Mullane running at defences way ahead of Shefflin holding a hurley and making a big catch.

That being said, I'd rather see an entertaining draw than a borefest Waterford win. Kilkenny have the tendency to ruin All Ireland finals (good tactics, but very negative to the game), so the odds of something entertaining on the 7th September is very unlikely.

If you ask me, Kilkenny's tactics are a bigger threat to the game than the GPA and Cork player strikes combined.
If it's round, I'll kick it!

Another high flying plonker comes out with the same nonsense!

Statistically speaking on average in the last 3 years Kilkenny have been more dominant than any other countyin the following areas......
1: Fielding under pressure.
2: Accurate first touch.
3: Ability to find a colleague with fast precise ball.
4: Ability to change direction of play to colleague.
5: Ability to carve open defences.
6: Accuracy with long range shooting.
7: General hurling ability unsurpassed:

Now if u can show me the negativity here then by all means show me.
Nobody knows what will truly happen against Waterford because any team can beat another on all-ireland day but our hurling record and style of play should not be unjustly tainted by people who just want to jump on the bandwagon of the so called "puke" hurling experts.
If u think we are ruining hurling then come up with the evidence, and not just examples like rough play etc.

No need for that kind of talk. This is my opinion and not the opinion of Dubs everywhere, although I know a good few of my mates would agree with me. None of you can tell me that the likes of Tommy Walsh, Henry Shefflin, Noel Hickey, Eddie Brennan and Derek Lyng are clean players. Especially Sheff, Brennan and Tommy. They've blurred the line. No doubt about it.

Anyway that's not the issue, Waterford for me to win hopefully. The response I've gotten from my post would further that hope.

What line would that be that you and a good few of your mates say that Kilkenny have blurred?

At a guess, would it be the line between being contenders as opposed to pretenders?

I totally agree. Kilkenny and Kerry are one and the same. Cynical. Much worse than the Northern teams, the two K's to about things in a sneaky underhand way

I would like Waterford to win, A; because as a Corkman I dont want KK to go ahead of us.
B;It would be good for hurling to break the mould of KK or Cork dominating.
I would'nt begrudge ye a 3 in a row.
Anyway thats my opinion

I swear to God if I keep hearing how KK keep playing the game on the edge, or play puke hurling. It's now very clear to me that the people making these remarks either never played the game, or only played it till the were U14 and were just pure shite. Hurlers on the ditch!!!

If you go through the history of the game, every team had a couple of hard men. Jesus I used to love watching Sylvey Lenane and Harry Ryan go at it. What about the 50's, 60's and 70's, where keepers were fair game. Every full back in the country was a tough whoor.

KK over the last 10 years have raised the bar and the approach to the game. I thought last years AI couldn't get any better, but the semi-final this year against Cork was magical - fielding, Larkin and Lyng's solo runs, point scoring, blockling, tackling, it had everything. If you want a lesson on how to play the game, go watch that game again. It was a hard hitting exciting game.

If you look at the disciplinary record of every team, you will see that KK has one of the best.
Lads, will ye mark your men!!!

I hope Waterford Win based on the following

The majority of the Kilkenny players have at least 2 if not 4 All Irelands in their pocket.

A last chance for some of the waterford Greats to win a medal before father time comes a calling and a just reward for their involvement in the game over the last 10 Years, Who would begrudge Ken Mc Grath or Tony Browne a medal

A waterford win would be a bigger boast for hurling as a whole in the county of waterford and in the other non big three hurling counties who would take heart from it just as Clare and Offally did for hurling in the 90's.

Kilkenny even if they lost seem certain to be an ever present in all Ireland finals for the next decade so their players will have the chance to pick up as many medals again.

Everyone likes an underdog.

However Reality suggests

I think Kilkenny will win based on the respective form this year and the overall strength of the team and supporting panel.

Kilkenny management have not failed to select the correct game plan since 2005 against Galway.

The drive of the KK Management.

I suspect they do have an eye on history in the three in a row.

I believe that Kilkenny have the determination and single mindness to go all the way to a five in a row which is only two years away.

By the way what odds a Kilkenny Grand Slam this year.

Im from cork and, though it galls me that we will lose our spot on top of the role of honour, i will be shouting for kilkenny sunday week.

Why?

If i hear one more waterford person say 'we/big dan/big ken deserve one' etc etc etc i will go nuts. You dont deserve one, the only team that deserves on is the one that scores most points on the first sunday in september.

For all their 'classy hurling' (the best hurling is the hurling that wins jayo's velvet slipper or whatever the hell your called), they have a remarkable habit of failing when needed. Their technique goes, they get ragged under pressure, thats brilliant in a munster final because its all about fire and brimstone, but in croker its a different story. take the great ken mcgrath. in 2006 he had a shot at greatness, the point that would equalise the semi vs cork. he had struck his frees beautifully all day. when the big one came his technique failed. he no longer took a measured lift and strike, he launched it up and lashed it. He should never have given Donal og that chance to ad another talking point to his long list.

Thirdly im a dentist. What the hell is their problem, they are all missing teeth, every man has at least one gone. Theres plenty of good hurlers out there that. Sorry that last one is tongue in cheek, its just a personal bugbear!!

Most people I've been talking to want WF to win, simply because its someone different, and cause they're on their last legs. Plus, unlike Kilkenny they've been involved in a lot of classic games over the past few years.
