Tony Forristal U14 Tournament 2007

Postby kilkennycat2005 » Wed Aug 22, 2007 10:01 am

This great under 14 inter county tournament is on iagain n Waterford this weekend.
First real chance at representing your county for young lads & from what I have seen in recent years some of the games are not too far off Minor inter county standard.

here's a link to the fixtures

As reigning champions I hope Wexford can pull it off again this year. 2 in a row would be great for the future.

Haven't got it with me but the KK panel is listed in this week's KK Voice if anyone has a copy to hand maybe they can reproduce same.
(btw Good to see South KK involvement with Kilmacow, Mooncoin, Ballyhale & others :D )

Waterford 3-10 Kilkenny 0-05

Ken Mcgrath, Tony Browne and Paul Flynn may not be preparing for an All ireland Final this weekend but what they have already helped achieve is put belief into that counties young hurlers.
Waterford easily beat Kilkenny, 3-10 to 0-05 at the Mount Sion ground on Saturday morning, a result that just did not happen pre the 1998 Waterford hurling revival.
Now the young hurlers of the Deise believe and expect to win against the big three at all grades.
This was a team that wanted to win versus a Kilkenny team of young lads maybe just happy to wear the jersey?
At under age nowadays the Kilkenny development system has worked in counties such as Waterford and likewise in Wexford who also make up this three team group.

Kilkenny failed to score from play in the entire two twenty minute halfs with just free taker Kevin Kelly of St Patricks, Ballyraggett scoring all five points from frees. Indeed it was a Kilkenny free that opened the scoring.
Cathal Curran equalised for Waterford before a fine solo and score by Gavin O'Brien of the Roanmore club put Waterford ahead.
Kilkenny were as good as Waterford in these early stages, playing against a slight breeze in fact, and two pointed frees put them 0-03 to 0-02 ahead. Kilkenny were not to score again in the opening half.
Waterford lifted their game from here on and four pointed frees by the accurate Jake Dillon of De Le Salle club along with a second point by nippy corner forward Cathal Curran from play by Dungarvan left the young Deise lads 0-07 to 0-03 ahead at the interval..

Kilkenny were conceding frees in an effort to stop a more 'with it" Waterford side and the opening score of the new half was a score as a result of this, a free from Dillon, his fifth of the morning.
A Kelly free reduced the margin for the young Cats but shortly after this Waterford got their opening goal.
A cross ball by Cathal Curran broke for the other corner man Peter O'Keeffe from Lismore club who batted it to the net.
Another Kelly free reduced the lead to 0-05 to 1-08 but that was to be the Cats last score of the game.
Dillon pointed a free for Waterford and after good passing the same player goaled, 2-09 to 0-05. Soon afterwards Jake got a further point from play after more good Waterford teamwork.
Before the finish it was goal number three by Cathal Curran after a good piece of play by Chris Kervick of Ballygunner.
Waterford have lost the last three Tony Forristal Finals to Tipperary, Kilkenny and Wexford. This easy win represents a good start.
In a three team group Kilkenny will now be relying on Wexford to beat Waterford and possibly help from a "slide rule"

In other games Limerick beat Tipperary 0-07 to 0-04 at Walsh park while at half-time a very impressive Dublin side, propped up by seven of the feile winning Castleknock sid led Cork 1-04 to 1-02.

TIPPERARY 0-07 LIMERICK 0-04

Even though they had probably 70% plus of the possession Tippeary made hard work of beating Limerick in this Tony Forristal Group One opener at Walsh park.
Helped by fine showings by forwards like Liam Mcgrath of Loughmore/Castleiney and big full number 14 Dan McCormack of Borrisoleigh they just about had enough for a smaller looking Limerick outfit.

At the break Tipperary led 0-03 to 0-02 as both teams struggled to get acclimatised to their biggest hurling weekend in their life so far.
A McCormack point put Tipp two ahead at the statrt of the new half, 0-04 to 0-02.
A free by Shane Dowling and a score from play by Jay Byrne left them all square but the green and gold outfit would not score again.
Tipperary added three points, the first from play by McGrath , the same player from a free and the games final score, an individual catch, solo run and point by McCormack.
So a good start by Tipp.

In the second game of the four team group Dublin beat Cork 1-07 to 1-06, after a close encounter.

By the way Kilkenny are now OUT of the event as Waterford have become the first team to reach the semi-finals with a 1-10 to 0-08 victory over Wexford to follow the earlier easy win.
Centre half forward Jake Dillon was again the goal scorer.

Thanks for that again kilkennycat2005. Great win for the Dubs.

Kilkenny out and failing to score from play v Waterford would seem to backup the crisis theory from Hattons Grace, although i'm sure he'll take no enjoyment from it.

Dubs lost heavy to Tipp afterwards Tayto, think it was 3-15 to 2-05.
Tipp also beat Cork in group to get through to Final.

Half-time in the semi-final & Waterford lead Galway 0-08 to 0-02, winners v Tipp at Walsh park tomorrow. Will update thread with FT result later on .

It's Waterford v Tipp in tomorrow's Tony Forristal Final.
Tipp qualified from the 4 team group beating Limerick, Dubs 3-15 to 2-05 & then beat Cork in what was effectively a semi final.
Waterford have just beat Galway 1-12 to 0-08 in the semi-final.

Waterford v Tipp Final on in Walsh Park tomorrow at 1.00pm.

After 26th years of staging the excellent Tony Forristal under 14 tournament Waterford at last have emerged victorious after an easy 0-12 to 0-04 victory over Tipperary in Walsh Park.
The Deise have lost four finals this decade alone, v Cork (2000), Tipperary (2004), Kilkenny (2005) and Wexford (2006) but the 2007 batch have shown how losing is a habit that does not have to be everlasting.

Tipperary were fIrst to score with a free by Liam McGrath but once Waterford got of the mark soon afterwards with a fine Peter O'Keeffe (Lismore) shot from the stand side the Deise were always in control here.
Points followed by Jake Dillon (De Le Salle), O'Keeffe from play after a Dillon pass, Cathal Curran (Dungarvan) and Dillon again. Waterford were convincingly 0-05 to 0-01 to the good.
Before the interval a Tipperary point from the bank side was answered by a fine Dillon free from midfield after a little bit of hassle, mainly involving Tipp players it has to be said.

HALF TIME WATERFORD 0-06 TIPPERARY 0-02

Waterford kept up the momentum at the start of the new half causing Tipp to concede further frees. Three of these were pointed by the splendid Dillon, who finished the day with 7 points although also missing a few scoreable frees.
A McGrath free reduced the lead but when O'Keeffe pointed after some great blocking down by the Waterford forwards it was time for mass substitutions as both sides settled for their respective positions.
McGrath from a free was Tipp's last score to make it 0-04 to 0-10 but by the close Eamon Power (Tramore) and a Jake Dilon "65" left Waterford deserving winners.

FULL TIME WATERFORD 0-12 TIPPERARY 0-04
