Would agree with you Steve about the brilliant 70s team. And don't forget what Murt Brennan would have done at FF on that team save for his serious injury. Tom Walsh would have been hovering too.

Not trying to be picky or anything, or to get diverted into what I consider to be the side track of " 6 great forwards", but a more than a plausible case can be made that greatness awaited B.Fitzpatrick until the early 80s. His points against the wind in 83 were superb.

On the more substantive nature of Sunday's match, I was at the Cork vs Clare challenge game last Sat night in Fermoy. While I find some of D.Walsh's placements a bit puzzling, I'm coming around to the view that even now he knows at the back of his mind what team he wants. I was struck by the substitutions he made and the lads he left on until the end of what proved to be a feisty enough affair against what I would consider to be, maybe John Conlon apart, more or less the Clare c'ship team. The lads left on until the end were getting plenty of time to prove themselves, and more than a few of them showed me anyway that they either need more time or just won't make it.

I'm puzzled by Aisake. I made the point earlier that I find it hard to see how he'll make the grade this year, and yet his touch seemed way better last year (albeit at a low enough level), with less done, than now. Maybe a case of trying too hard or something.

ah yeah i understand what your sayin about billy fitzpatrick really coming to prominence in 82 & 83
but my point is as a (collective unit) they were 6 great forwards, not sayin individually ya know but
in fairness they nearly all were.

Back to the topic, this is the team i'd send out to play Cork on Sunday

Herity
C Hickey Hogan Dalton
Walsh Tyrrell Delaney
Tennyson PJ Delaney
Mulhall Lyng P Hogan
R Hogan Power Fogarty

While PJ Ryan obviously is number one, it could be a great chance to give David Herity some senior experience.
Backs and midfield stay as is.
Im assuming Rice is out with the hamstring. And not too sure how much training Lyng has got behind him but we need a ball winner on the forty.
Hopefully Richie back from the knock against Offaly. If not then Larkin to start.

Would agree with that..no harm giving Paul Murphy and Lester Ryan a run..It's unfortunate that Paddy Hogan's best line is the half back line, probably centre back, not really sure he's a half forward..Wouldn't mind see hme get a run at midfield at some stage.

I'd start with:

Ryan
C Hickey, Hogan, Dalton
Tommy, Tyrrell, JJ
P Hogan, J Tennyson
Mulhall, P Hartley, Larkin
E Brennan, R Power, R Hogan

If Richie Hogan isn't fit i'd probably start with Taggy mainly because there isn't anyone else, I'd give Paddy Hogan and Hartley a start i think there as good as anyone who started ahead of them last weekend, if Rice was fit he'd defintely start but looks like hes struggling

Ian O'Riordan wrote:O'Connor keen to give Kilkenny a test

From the Irish Times

NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE: IF THERE was a sorry point in Cork hurling in, say, the last 10 or even 20 years then it was probably last season’s National League meeting with Kilkenny. Cork’s tails were up. The infamous players strike was finally broken. New manager Denis Walsh was on board for the first time. Yet they left Nowlan Park that day on a score line of Kilkenny 4-26 Cork 0-11 – which also reads as a 27-point defeat for Cork.

Worse still, Kilkenny got a standing ovation. At half-time. It was like Placido Domingo receiving garlands of flowers at the interval in La Traviata. There was no denying Cork’s humiliation. So on Sunday, they get their chance for some revenge when they host Kilkenny in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and although neither team will be still caught up with last year’s result, it is an obvious reference point.

Cork’s Ben O’Connor has described it as “embarrassing”, but also says Cork are a far different team this time than they were this time last year – and obviously they are. They’ve won their first two league games, against Offaly and Limerick, and while Kilkenny enjoyed a win over Offaly, they went down to Tipperary in last Sunday’s rematch of the All-Ireland final – and suddenly they are the team under greater pressure to perform.

“It was embarrassing in Nowlan Park last year,” said O’Connor. “There was a big crowd in, and you had fellas roaring at you. It was a bad place to be. There is no point in saying otherwise, that it will be in fellas’ minds alright.

“But we have moved on from there. We’re looking at putting in a big performance and going in to win it. We are also looking at it as a stepping stone to the championship this year. So there won’t be too much emphasis on it either. But when you play Kilkenny you get the first gauge of where fellas are really at, and whether they will be able to perform under pressure. The week after we have Tipp. These are the two big games for Cork to see where we are at the moment.”

Cork currently top Division One, on points difference, over Galway – who themselves face a potentially league-defining match against Tipperary. For the Limerick hurlers, meanwhile, the journey to Dungarvan to face Waterford is another daunting prospect against the continuing background of the players’ strike

This game is definately going to be interesting. I wonder what changes (if any) BC will make for this game. Remember what Donal Og said about how he felt about KK last year and how he felt about KK supporters. I don't think BC will have any trouble about movating the KK team on Sunday.

I was asked what my choice of Cork team would be for Sunday. It's a mix of those I think should be there for c'ship and those who need a test against KK to see where they are at. But make no mistake, Cork should go all out for this one. The local press are in a 'whipping up the mob' frenzy wrt last year's game against KK in the league so a big crowd should be expected. Then again, maybe the sombero crowd are currently in Lanzarotte. I certainly didn't see those 'shoppers' out in force for the Offaly game. Anyway, I digress

1. Cusack
2. Brian Murphy
3. Cadogan (assuming he plays hurling this weekend. What a shagged up state of affairs that is. Or he could the allstar full back in both codes this year. Go figure).
4. Shane Murphy
5. Shane O'Neill
6. Curran
7. Ray Ryan
8. Kenny
9. Gaa
10. Ben

11. Mark O'Sullivan
12. Cussen
13. Fraggie
14 Aisake (let's see how the experiement works)

Looks like a strong selection. They won't be short of pace at midfield anyway, if Cody picks Tennyson and Delaney there again, it's hard to see the Cats winning that battle.

Bit disappointed not to see Cussen at full-forward, would have liked to have seen what he's like. I don't really rate O'halpin, looks very awkward.

Exactly what I was thinking. RWAC seems to think it will be a test of the experiment that is Aisake but I'd much prefer to put the experiment that is Cussen to the test. In fairness I'd be very surprised if Cussen doesn't come on at some stage. Of the two I think he has more promise.
Brian Murphy in the half backs is also something I'm a bit puzzled about. Surely Walsh isn't going to be playing him there come championship!
It could be a good game. Bad results in the league don't usually affect Cork too much but a big loss here probably would have a very negative affect after last year. We need a reasonable result - preferably a win (when was the last time we beat ye in the league?) but a close result at any rate.
If the weather continues to hold out we could see a nice enough crowd which will create a bit of atmosphere.
